Unlike many other VPNs, Proton VPN includes a malware blocker free of charge. The iOS app shows flags of individual countries, which is a nice visual touch. You can't set profiles in the mobile apps, however. I thought these apps were well-designed and implemented, providing a lot of data in a mobile-friendly format. The mobile apps have many of the same features and display much of the same information, including the server map. While some users may appreciate this feature, I don't think I would use it myself as I don't typically tweak my VPN settings to that extent. The desktop apps also let you set "profiles," which are combinations of specific servers and protocols. I thought this was useful for monitoring my activities, although it's not absolutely necessary. The desktop apps feature a session traffic graph below the server map that depicts your data usage and upload/download speeds in real-time. Settings and Features: The dashboard presents a wealth of information and settings, although these vary somewhat depending on whether you're using the desktop or mobile apps. This provides faster access and is a time-saving feature that many VPNs offer. Once you find a server that works well, you can mark it as a favorite. Note that the default server may not actually be the fastest for you so it's best to test several nearby servers. When you connect the server map says "connected" and points to the server you're using.įor consistency, I used a server in New York to test all VPNs. Alternatively, there's a "quick connect' button that connects you to the fastest server for your location or you can browse servers by country or search for them individually. All of the apps show a large server map that you can zoom and scroll through until you find the server you want. Primary Controls: I found all of the primary controls easy to use and locate. I liked the interface, although some people may find it too busy and want a more streamlined experience like the one ExpressVPN offers. I liked that you can hide the map and use a smaller window with just your connection settings. There's also plenty of other information, such as the protocol you're using, your VPN IP address, the amount of data you've uploaded and downloaded while connected, etc. Look and Feel: Proton VPN's mostly black dashboard is more complicated than that of many other VPNs, with a world map showing where all the servers are located.
